On January 11, 2019 Metro Lekopoy passed away peacefully at the age of 82 in the Michener Extendicare Nursing Home in Red Deer, Alberta.

He is survived by his wife Marion Lekopoy (Red Deer), daughter and son-in-law Janice and Don Halverson (Red Deer) and their son Brody; daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Ian Magee (Calgary) and their daughters Emily and Madeline Magee; brothers Bill, Tony and Butch and sisters Darlene and Sandra. “Unc” will be greatly missed by his two special girls Justine and Rhianne. He was predeceased by his mother Mary Lekopoy, brother Mike Rodnisky and sister Rose Marie Struch.

Metro was born in Canora, Saskatchewan on March 5, 1936 and as a young boy moved to Flin Flon with his family. He received all his education in Flin Flon and graduated from Hapnot Collegiate in 1954. While in high school he met his wife Marion MacKenzie and they were married in August 1958, having recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Metro spent 35 years working at the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission eventually becoming both an Assistant Manager and Manager. He retired in 1991.

As a teenager Metro was avidly involved in hockey, baseball and high school curling. He spent many years as a referee with Flin Flon Minor Hockey and the Western Canada Hockey League. In later years his interests became the sports of curling and golf – spending most of his summer mornings at the Phantom Lake Golf Course with his old friend Red and his winter evenings curling and making ice at the Ross Lake Curling Club.

In 2010 Metro and Marion left Flin Flon and moved to Red Deer where they could be closer to their grandchildren. They have enjoyed many wonderful years attending their grandchildren’s school and athletic events.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial Celebration of Life will be held later this summer in Flin Flon.

Marion, Lisa and Janice,
I was so sorry to hear of Metro’s passing. He is now at eternal peace. He was a wonderful friend and the best boss ever. He will be truly missed. I was so happy to spend some time with him at the restaurant when he told me of his illness. He was such a character and I am positive that you have many memories and stories to lighten your heart. Our hearts are never ready for that final goodbye. My sincere condolences on your loss. Laurel & Isabell

Mr. Lekopoy was a very kind neighbor to our Mom, Margaret Folwark. With no family in Flin Flon, he kept her walkways clear of snow to enable her to maintain her independence. It was a very kind gesture that we very much appreciated. We send along our sympathy to his family.
