Obituary

It is with profound sadness and gratitude that we announce the passing of Mal Jacobson of Denare Beach on June 5, 2021. Mal was born in 1938 in Smeaton, Saskatchewan, to parents Eileen and Jake and spent much of his life in Saskatchewan. He was particularly drawn to the north where he felt comfort in the harsh environment that was contrasted by extreme beauty and he spent much of his time working and playing in the area. He loved being on the water (not in it) and hosted hundreds of people fishing throughout the years, letting a select few in on his secret spots to enjoy a day of fishing and good company. He worked as a teen with his dad commercial fishing on the lake and often spoke about the long hours and poor pay but with an underlying sense of deep love and appreciation. He also enjoyed a good hunt, both with friends or himself where he could take on the challenge of the day and finishing it with games of playing crib or solitaire. Mal was a talented man who could do most anything he put his mind and efforts in to. His talents shone through in his long career with SaskTel and through his exploits in track and field, basketball, fastball, snooker and his great love of curling. His musical gifts included accordion, banjo, guitar and harmonica with many an evening entertaining friends and family. He was a voracious reader of fact and fiction with a book rarely far from his reach, continually adding to his intelligence stores. Mal impacted so many people in his life and was deeply loved by many friends and family - he will be greatly missed.

So very sorry to hear of Mal's passing. Many pleasant thoughts of Mal and we got to know him during our annual fishing expedition where we would see him on the lake or at the marina where he always had something to say to us all. Sincerest condolences to Mal's family during this very difficult time.

When I was young Mal was my hero. He was handsome, funny, and had a laugh that made everyone smile. He seemed about perfect to me. In 1972 I joined the Canadian military. Basic training was in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, and it was brutal. Mal wrote me a letter, which, apparently he did not do often. He told me he believed I could do anything I decided to, but there would be no shame in throwing in the towel and if I chose that, he would drive out and bring me back to Saskatchewan. I kept that letter for many years and pulled it out from time to time and it always gave me the confidence to push forward. I loved him, and I know he loved me too.
