Harry was the tenth child of Andrew and Frances (Maydaniuk) born on November, 30, 1932 in Rossburn, Manitoba.
Harry began his teaching career in 1953, at Shortdale, Lewis and Ninga, Manitoba before heading north to Flin Flon in 1958. He accepted a position at Parkdale School teaching grades 5 and 6. He did Principal’s relief for the next 2 years, moving between five schools. After that he was principal of Channing School and taught grade 6. In 1964, he became principal of Parkdale School where he spent 21 years. In 1985, he was assigned to McIsaac School as vice-principal where he worked until his retirement in 1989.
In 1962, Harry met the love of his life, Jean Basaraba, a fellow teacher. He asked her to a Valentine’s party and the romantic gesture worked as they were married on July 20, 1963 in Ethelbert, Manitoba. Together they raised their children, Reece and Karna. They enjoyed travelling to several places in Canada and the United States and winter vacations to Mexico and Jamaica.
Harry had a passion for gardening and was the president of the Flin Flon Horticultural society. He loved spending time in his greenhouse and roaming around the bush picking mushrooms and berries. His other hobbies and interests over the years included fishing, camping, wine making, bowling and curling in the Hot Stove League. He was a devout member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church. He volunteered at bingo for both churches. He worked as a casual guard at the local RCMP detachment and was an active provincial and federal elections worker.
Harry touched many lives over the years through his teaching, gardening and church work. He was a kind, loyal man with a fierce love for his family, especially his four grandsons, whom he treasured.
Harry was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Frances; brothers Mike, Joe, John and Matt; sisters Elsie, Anne, Helen, Pauline and Zelma.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife Jean (Eugenia Basaraba) of 57 years; son Reece (Charlyn); daughter Karna (Mike); grandsons Rylan, Zachary, Aiden and Evan; brother Walter (Kathy); sister-in-law Marion; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
