Mary Evans Obituary

Mary Evans of Flin Flon, Manitoba, age 100 years and 7 months, passed away on February 28, 2024.  She was born in Wadena, Saskatchewan to Henry and Olina Evans (nee Larson).  She moved with her parents and older brother Stuart to Flin Flon in 1936.  Her younger brother, Cameron Evans, was born in Flin Flon on April 4, 1938.  She had a close relationship with Cam and frequently visited him when he lived in Vancouver.

She is survived by her nieces Gail Brown (Ralph Brown) and Patricia Evans (Don Dejewski), grand nieces Cara Brown and Lise Brown, grand niece Jacqueline Dejewski and grand nephew Michael Dejewski, great grand nephews Joshua Peacock, Kai Peacock and Tian Brown.  She is also survived by her “adopted” family members Vania and Sigurd Halldorson.

Mary often told stories about growing up on the farm.  On really cold days her dad would pull her two miles to school in a sleigh pulled by a horse called Jim.  Alternatively, her brother Stuart would ride the horse and pull her to school on a toboggan.

Mary studied at the business college in Winnipeg Manitoba and worked at Jackson Upholstery Fabrics from 1948 to 1951.  She then returned to Flin Flon and was the head administrative assistant to four general managers at the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company. She was very proud of her long and fulfilling career and the personal relationships that she developed through her work.

Mary was an active member of the Lutheran Church.  She sang in the choir and participated in the Women's’ Auxiliary and quilting group.

Mary was an excellent conversationalist and a great listener.  She was interested in every thing that was going on in the world – especially the lives of the queen and the royal family.  She and was attentive to everybody she met.  She had a terrific memory was able to come up with an appropriate quote at the right time from a poem or a saying based on her folk wisdom.  She had a vast knowledge of Flin Flon families.  She also had a keen sense of fashion and was always a stylish and attractive dresser.  During her many trips to Winnipeg to treat her macular degeneration she always scheduled enough time to shop in order to update her wardrobe.

Mary was interested in photography and was a member of the Flin Flon Photography Club.  She had many beautiful photographs of the Flin Flon area and of her yard and garden.

Mary had the opportunity to travel to all of the places on her wish list.  She went on many bus trips throughout Canada and the US and visited Great Britain, Paris, Washington, New York and Los Angeles.  She loved musicals and attended presentations such as South Pacific and Les Misérables as part of her travel itinerary.  She was an enthusiastic supporter of the Flin Flon Glee club and had great things to say about their contribution to the Flin Flon community.

Mary’s family would like to thank Christine Bell and Marlene and Doug Anderson for their care and kindness which allowed Mary to stay in her own home well past her 100th birthday.  Also thank you to all the staff at Home Care, the Flin Flon Hospital and at Northern Lights Manor.
